Join us to learn the latest trends in healthcare facilities management from thought leaders from across the country. Compass Healthcare Facilities Symposium gathers New England-based healthcare professionals to explore new concepts, share best practices, reflect on challenges, and discover innovative solutions in a relaxed, informal setting. This year’s symposium takes place seaside in beautiful Ogunquit, in southeastern Maine.
The theme, What’s Next? Preparing for the Unexpected, addresses challenges in planning, response and recovery of disasters, which range from hurricanes and floods to disease outbreaks and terrorism.
Dr. Nicole Lurie, Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, will share her experience regarding the careful planning required of governmental agencies and healthcare institutions in preparation for both natural and man-made events.
Superstorm Sandy is only the most recent natural disaster to demonstrate the importance of building resilient infrastructure – whether medical, scientific, or administrative. In this symposium, Dr. Lurie will share insights from her experiences responding to threats ranging from hurricanes to bird flu. In all cases, strong and innovative day-to-day infrastructure is the backbone of a successful response and recovery. What innovations can enable us to better identify medically fragile people? How can we ensure that all scientific property is protected during an emergency? How can big data help make even the slightest difference? How can we budget for the unexpected? The lessons we learn as we respond to events caused by man and Mother Nature alike can be distilled into best practices that can mitigate damage in an emergency and improve the lives of patients that touch the healthcare system every day. This session will explore how to wring new and innovative ideas out of our next disaster, and importantly, how to disseminate them widely.
Dian Traisci-Marandola, APRN, MSN, MPH, will provide a boots-on-the-ground perspective on disaster response. Traisci-Marandola is a healthcare consultant and offers insight into proven successful response techniques.
Other topics presented throughout the day address emerging technologies, financing strategies, and best practices from experts such as: Dr. Allan Teel, of Full Circle America; Aaron Becker, of Lancaster Pollard; Sacha Burn of Humanscale; and Brian Haapala of Stroudwater Associates.
